Scaling and root planning
Scaling and root planing is often called a “deep cleaning.” It is a specialized treatment used to help stop gum disease in its early to moderate stages. Unlike a regular cleaning that focuses on the surface of your teeth, deep cleaning targets the bacteria, plaque, and tartar that hide below the gumline.
Why You Might Need It:
Gum disease begins when plaque and tartar build up around the gums, causing inflammation (gingivitis). If left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth and harmful bacteria damage the bone and supporting structures.
What to Expect During the Procedure:
- Scaling – We gently remove plaque and tartar from above and below your gumline.
- Root Planing – We smooth the roots of your teeth so your gums can reattach and bacteria have a harder time returning.
- Comfort – We use a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the procedure.
